Cross Lake Housing Development
KHN Sawatzky & Associates has worked directly with the Cross Lake Housing Authority in producing the majority of the housing units and complexes in Cross Lake First Nation, Manitoba for over 25 years. From single-family dwellings to multi-unit housing complexes, KNH has been there.
KNH designed a multi-unit housing project in the Albert’s Lake Subdivision in Cross Lake that won the 2008 Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation’s (CMHC) National Housing Award for Best Practices in Affordable Housing.
This project consists of eight fourplex buildings with a total of thirty-two new energy-efficient housing units. The design of these new housing units incorporated a number of features intended to minimize energy use, increase tenant comfort and reduce maintenance and operation costs. Some of these included low cost and emissions components, low flow plumbing components, increased insulation, low U rated windows, high efficiency HRV system, a slab-on-grade concrete foundation system as well as a closed loop horizontal geothermal heating and cooling system with a heat pump technology.
Other projects in the community have included the development and creation of an energy-efficient construction guide for single-family dwellings that the local builders now follow.
